About RECOUP

RECOUP, founded in 1990, is the UK’s leading independent authority and trusted voice on plastics resource efficiency and recycling. As a registered charity, our work is supported by a network of over 170 members who share our commitments including a more sustainable use of plastics, increased plastics recycling, improved environmental performance and meeting legislative requirements. We achieve these by leading, advising, challenging, educating, and connecting the whole value chain to keep plastics in a circular system that protects the environment, underpinned by evidence and knowledge.

Aims

The County Durham Recycle Plastics project is aimed at encouraging County Durham residents to recycle more and improve the quality of plastics packaging recycled via household collections.

The project aims to educate on the journey plastics packaging takes and where this is currently happening in the region.

The project will work within the community to explain the recycling process, how items need to be sorted for recycling and answering plastics recycling questions.

This process will be bespoke to County Durham and will seek to explain which plastics can be recycled and which cannot and the reasons why. The communications will also highlight any preparation of packaging which needs to be done by the resident prior to recycling.

The project will also highlight the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle waste hierarchy model to County Durham residents.
